The Qatari news network Al Jazeera issued this Wednesday (05.11.2022) a statement accusing Israel of having “murdered in cold blood” the Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh (51), one of the most prominent of that station in Arabic, during an Israeli army raid on a refugee camp in the city of Jenin, north of the occupied West Bank.
“In a tragic premeditated murder that violates international laws and norms, the Israeli occupation forces, in cold blood, killed our reporter Shireen Abu Akleh,” the Doha-based Al Jazeera statement said. The journalist died after a bullet hit her in the head, while another fellow journalist, Ali al-Samudi, was shot in the back and her condition is stable, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
“We condemn this heinous crime, through which it is intended to prevent the media from carrying out their message, and we hold the Israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for the murder of the late colleague Shireen,” says the chain, which called the international community to condemn and hold accountable “the Israeli occupying forces for deliberately attacking and killing our colleague Shireen Abu Akleh”.
“Sponsored Terrorism”
Qatar’s deputy foreign minister, Lolwah Al Khater, claimed on Twitter that Israeli troops shot the journalist “in the face,” even though she was wearing a press vest and helmet, adding that “this sponsored terrorism by Israel must stop, and unconditional support for that country must end.”

The Israeli army indicated that during the raid on the refugee camp, its forces were attacked by “armed suspects”, for which the soldiers opened fire. “The Army is investigating what happened, in particular the possibility that a journalist was hit by live fire from a Palestinian,” the institution said. The Israeli Army denied that it deliberately fired against journalists and put on the table the idea of carrying out a joint investigation with the Palestinians.
The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, described what happened as an “execution” that is part of Israeli efforts to hide the “truth” about its occupation. Hamas, meanwhile, which controls Gaza, said what happened was “a premeditated assassination.” The death of Shireen Abu-Aqleh occurs almost a year after the destruction -by Israel- of the Jala tower, where the offices of the Qatari channel in the Gaza Strip were located.
