LAREDO – A Hispanic, who has been accused of having sexually assaulted a minor under the age of 15 He assures that he only had “friendly relations” with the young woman, according to a Laredo Police report.
José Alberto Zúñiga-Chaires, 20, faces two charges of indecency with a minor by sexual contact.
Officers responded to a report of sexual abuse of a minor at a residence located in the 3400 block of Eucalyptus Street at around 12:27 a.m. Sunday.
One woman said that she had just found out that her 15-year-old daughter had been sexually abused by a family friendwho was identified as Zúñiga-Chaires.
The mother stated that they were at a birthday party and that during the celebration she noticed that her daughter was gone and asked other children to help her look for her daughter. A brother of the young woman discovered the half-naked minor in the patio of the residence located at the back of the house.
The young woman’s brother said he saw Zúñiga-Chaires running from the scene, but shortly after he was detained by relatives of the young woman for police questioning.
Zúñiga-Chaires stated that he and the 15-year-old girl had been involved in a “friendly relationship.”, but denied having had sexual contact with her. He added that in relation to the incident, the young woman had lowered her pants and underwear by herself.
The defendant later retracted his statement that he did not have sexual contact with the minor and said that he did touch the girl’s genitals with his hands two weeks ago and during the party that day when they were discovered by the girl’s brother.
Zúñiga-Chaires is in jail.
