How to change the oil in your car yourself

How to change the oil in your car yourself

April 23, 2022 by alex Leave a Comment

Motor oil plays a fundamental role in the quality of performance of our car, by keeping the engine lubricated, the chances of parts wearing are reduced and they can better withstand the high temperatures to which they are exposed.

But keep in mind that with the passage of time and the mileage traveled, the oil deteriorates and its properties lose effectiveness. Bad oil could cause irreversible damage to the engine.

In addition, the use causes the oil to be consumed, circulating without it for just a few seconds can completely damage the engine. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations found in the car’s manual.

It is advisable to check the oil level every thousand kilometers or monthly, in order to add the missing amount, which must be of the same brand as the one that was put before.

For this we have to check the car on flat ground and with the engine cold. The oil dipstick should be removed and the minimum level marker checked. The average capacity between one brand and another is one liter.

How to perform an oil change?

Depending on the type of oil, the frequency of its change varies. The ideal would be from 3,000 miles for minerals, 6,000 miles for semi-synthetics (a combination of both), and over 9,000 miles for synthetics, unless there is a specific recommendation from the manufacturer.

It is not at all recommended to exceed 12,000 miles without changing the oil, especially if we make many cold starts due to the weather or our journeys are usually short.

Lubricating oil is the blood for your engine, that’s why you should always choose a good quality one and not put the life of your car at risk.

When we change the engine oil, we must take into account that it is a highly polluting product, so we cannot do it on public roads or pour it down the drain. Recycled oil must be collected and taken to an authorized recycling point. It is best to use latex or vinyl gloves to avoid stains.

The first step is to empty the oil pan, with the engine off but if possible the oil is hot and rested for at least ten minutes. We will remove the nuts from the tank and place a tank where the oil can fall.

Then we will replace the crankcase nuts and proceed to replenish the oil that we have emptied. It is important to remember to carefully remove the cap in case heat pressure has built up.

It is convenient to change the oil filter at least every two times that this liquid is replaced.
