The Spanish Jorge Meredefender of the Águilas del América, criticized this Friday that in European football, where he was trained and played until last January, the level of Mexican football is underestimated.
“It seems that when you are in Europe what is outside Europe does not seem to have the same quality or level, that is false. I had no doubt that the Mexican League had a high level and it hasn’t surprised me”, he explained at a press conference champion with Spain in the European sub’19 and sub’21.
Meré signed for the Águilas, the winningest team in Mexico with 13 league titles, in January after spending five years in the Cologne of the German Bundesliga.
The 25-year-old centre-back acknowledged that his first months in Liga MX were complicatedbut assured that he is already adapted and ready to fight for a place in the starting scheme of America.
“There are many factors that influence to adapt as the altitude of Mexico City (above 2,000 meters above sea level), the game is different, I came on vacation from my previous club, now I feel perfect to compete with any rival“added the former Sporting de Gijón defender.
The native of Oviedo came to the picture of the Mexican capital during the management of Argentine Santiago Solarifired at the beginning of March due to poor results.
After the departure of the former coach of Real Madrid, who was replaced by the Argentine Fernando Ortiz, Meré has only added two of the five starters he has in the first 15 days of the Clausura 2022 tournament.
Although Ortiz has not seen Meré as a recurring player in his scheme, the Spaniard praised the work of ‘Tano’who took America out of the last places in the standings and now has them in seventh place, in the fight for places in the final phase with two games remaining in the regular schedule.
“What ‘Tano’ conveyed to us was tranquility and trust to each of the members of the squad. That was important, when things don’t go well that’s when you have to push harder. Tano is having all the players involved, whether they play or not”, said the Iberian.
The Eagles will return to activity this Saturday at visit the UANL Tigerssecond in the table, a duel that could put them among the four best classified who will avoid the playoffs and advance directly to the quarterfinals.
