The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting an investigation against the businessman Ferdinand Peyro for alleged money laundering, who would have benefited members of the Colombian guerrilla.
Regarding this investigation, the Univisión network had access to videos and documents in which Peyro, in addition to offering laundering methods, boasted of his friendship with the Mexican cardinal. Norbert Riveraand even offered to launder money with the participation of the religious.
The truth is that there is a great friendship between the two characters, since Norberto rubbed shoulders with the great Mexican businessmen and politicians. His power in the ecclesiastical structure of Latin America was such that some media revealed that he was among the favorite cardinals to succeed Pope Benedict XVI.
The videos mentioned in a Univision report were recorded by an FBI informant who posed as an intermediary for a Colombian narco-guerrilla organization.
In the audiovisual material, said informant expressed his concern because the European banks were increasingly putting more obstacles to the guerrilla to deposit millions of dollars from the sale of drugs in cash.
Faced with this problem, Fernando Peyro explained how to erase the trace of money through banks, insurance companies and companies in the United States, Mexico, Spain and Italy. “I have the whole structure, so that you understand me”he assured, in addition to showing off his friendship with Cardinal Norberto Rivera.
In the same conversation, the informant asks Peyro if it would be convenient to mention the name of the cardinal to the guerrillas to convey confidence as to the high level of the operation.
“You know that’s very impressive,” the informant told him. At that moment, the video shows Peyro handing the visitor a photograph with the cardinal. “Take her away,” says Peyro. “Check it out who it is, we are here in the Vatican”explains the businessman pointing to the photograph.
According to Univision, the recording was made in April 2019 in an apartment that the businessman rented in Mexico City. Minutes earlier, Peyro asked visitors to leave their cell phones in the living room, but the informant recorded everything with a hidden camera on his watch.
In another document in which a former FBI informant asked to be identified only as Gloria, she wrote that Peyro offered to launder money with the participation of Rivera. This is a report that Gloria submitted in April 2021 to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to support an asylum application.
“He offered us to start working with him and his boss … his boss is the Vatican finance secretary in Rome, Norberto Rivera Carrera,” Gloria wrote in an account of her activities with the FBI.
Norberto Rivera resigned from his position five years ago for reaching retirement age. Although he was consulted by Univision to find out his version of this case, he has refused to give interviews.
