The NFL is in mourning. Dwayne Haskins, quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, died in the early hours of this Saturday after being hit by a vehicle. The player had months in the franchise to recover his position as a starter.
Journalist Adam Schefter reported that the 24-year-old was hit by a car in South Florida during the NFL offseason. The former Ohio State player was going to turn 25 on May 3.
“I am devastated and speechless by the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh. and he was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great partner, but even more a great friend to many”; wrote Mike Tomlin, coach of the Pittsburgh team.
Haskins was a standout college player in NCAA football with Ohio State. His performance in that league led him to be drafted by the Washington Commanders in 2019 and be their starting quarterback.
The quarterback was only for two seasons in which he added only 16 games with 12 touchdown passes. He also had 14 interceptions and won three games.
His tenure ended very soon, after taking a performance drop and breaking COVID protocols in 2020. But after being hired by the Steelers in 2021, he hoped to relaunch his career and was confident of earning the starting job during the offseason. This is a blow to the NFL and the Steelers team.
“He was a young man with tremendous potential and quite a catchy personality. It’s a fact that we’re heartbroken. Our hearts and prayers go out to Dwayne’s family members and all those who knew and love him.”
