The US Department of Defense pointed out that Russian ships are bombing the city of Mariupolin southeastern Ukraine, according to the data available to it.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told a news conference that the US has indications that Russian ships in the Sea of Azov are contributing to the assault on the port town of Mariupol by firing projectiles.
In parallel, “it is difficult for us to quantify it nor can we go into detail about the type of ammunition that is being used, but it is quite clear that in the last two days there has been an increase in Russian naval activity in the Black Sea“, he highlighted.
On February 24, Russia began the invasion of Ukraine, which, for its part, is receiving military support from the US, which is supplying it with military equipment to defend itself.
Currently, Mariúpol is focusing attention on the war with Russia, in a siege that has been going on for days and is likely to last longer.
Some 400,000 people have been trapped in Mariupol for more than two weeks amid heavy shelling. which have cut off central supplies of electricity, heating and water, according to local sources.
Russia urged Ukrainian forces on Sunday to surrender and leave Mariupol “unarmed,” something kyiv called “delirium.”
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Tuesday that the Mariupol resistance, heavily bombed by the Russians a day agos, is “saving” other cities, such as Dnipro, kyiv and Odessa, from the intensification of an offensive against them.
