Pontus Ward Wiklund was suspended as coach of the Sweden women’s under-18 team then during the World Cup that takes place in North Macedonia, due to an altercation that caused at the Copenhagen airport.
The Swede joked to air traffic control officials that he was carrying a bomba joke that ended with his arrest by the authorities and his eviction from Terminal 2 of the airfield.
Wiklund was replaced from the national team by Tomás Axner, who is the coach of the senior women’s team. Wiklund came out on social media to apologize for the embarrassment and panic he caused at the airport.
“I completely lost my mind, and I joked about something you should never do, especially in that place. I want to apologize to my team, the federation, the airport staff and others who have been affected by this. I realize how serious and how idiotic my actions were.”
Önnereds, the club to which Pontus Wiklund belongs, issued a statement condemning the actions, but he will not be suspended nor will he have to leave the club, so he will not only be with the national team.
“Önnered condemns Pontus’s actions in this event. However, this has not changed our view of him as a person. and his confidence as a coach in our association remains unchanged. We are looking forward to the upcoming season and now, together with Pontus, we will put all our focus on driving our partnership to new successes.”
Wiklund misses out on the eighth edition of the U-18 Women’s Handball World Cup in North Macedonia. The World Cup was going to be held in Georgia, but due to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, he had to move from the country to avoid any kind of danger to the teams and the athletes.
