The United States and China are in intense negotiations amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to keep communication channels open and assess national security risks to both nations.
This Monday, the US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, met with the director of the Office of the Chinese Foreign Affairs Commission, Yang Jiechi. The meeting in Rome lasted seven hours.
“It was an intense session that reflects the gravity of the moment, also as part of our commitment to keep the lines of communication open,” revealed a White House official.
The conversation between Sullivan and Jiechi focused on the national security of both countries, as well as the next steps in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“The National Security Advisor made it clear where we are right now, how we got to this point and what the risks are going forward,” the senior official added in a phone call with reporters.
